If you’re interested in how often severe weather events happen, there are several climatology resources available including Storm Prediction Center’s severe weather climatology page, tornado climatology page, and lightning climatology page. Additionally, NOAA’s Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) maintains a Storm Events Database and an archive of radar data. In fact, the National Weather Service office in Binghamton, NY, issued 90 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings from July 1-27, their fourth greatest number for July back to 1983. July has been an active month for severe weather.
